Alison Mc Donald has spent many hours manipulating the humble plastic bottle, and collecting thousands of plastic lids to make a variety of.

Some of us have some that are a few years old now or have relatives or know people who have some older prints, but generally even with these sources available we will find that we want to seek out more older images. There are, luckily, a large number of older images available from a variety of sources and here we are going to explore many of these. There may be restrictions, such as print quality, overprinting or fees those holding the images want, that you may need to consider, especially if you want to publish or reproduce the old image in any way.

You might like to think of the prints falling into five groups Originals out of copyright – No restriction or further costs. Reproductions that are available copyright free, Public Domain and the like. Reproductions that claim to have copyright, or reproduction fees. Images that carry marks, so small or for some other reason have limited real use. In Britain copyright is for the life of the photographer plus 75 years, and authors have the same protection. In other countries the rules are a little different, for example in the USA books have a copyright of 75 years from publication rather then the death of the author.

In these cases all you are expected to do is to make reasonable attempts to discover it, and be prepared to stop using them if challenged by someone with a genuine claim. The person who donated these images did not own the copyright, but the University has photographs of these images and now offers these as prints for sale and claims the rights to reproduction fees for these images. The same situation arises with photographic prints or reproductions out of old books.

Copyright like patents while a benefit, can also be restrictive, stifle developments and cause a great deal of work to be lost to future generations.

Providing family historians and genealogists with information on UK and Irish genealogical sources, topics, finding aids and contacts relevant to family history. GenGuide is completely non-profit and I enjoy looking out for new resources and keeping the site up to date. I do this for nothing because family history research is all about helping each other. However the cost of maintaining GenGuide means I need your help as well, especially with the site hosting costs.

I am thinking about writing a book about postcards sent in the early years of the 20th century. I have contacted Francis Frith who still sell versions of their old images and they are happy for me to use any postcards that I can prove were used more than 70 years ago.

I have read posts on here that advise it’s 50 years but FF have said Can I apply that to all the postcards? I know many of the publishers ceased trading decades ago and others were absorbed into other companies and tracing them has been virtually impossible. The theme of the book requires me to research the recipients of the cards and that means including the text in the messages.

Many of the cards are anonymous and it would be impossible to trace who wrote them.
